1/18 RA #4

I’m not sure exactly what this question is asking for, since it says to answer that question, but then tells me to give a list of arguments that seem reasonable in “these cases.” The diet and conversion examples? I just don’t quite get it, but it is the one I am best equipped to answer.

When it comes to persuasion in my community, it is usually something religious related. Those are the only ones I can think of, at least. I have been to church three times a week all my life where we often learn about some pretty deep Biblical stuff. Everyday things just don’t stick out to you as much as major passages you have held specific views on for a while get changed. Someone did talk me into it because it was a passage in the book of Hebrews. It wasn’t a major issue like racism.

Hebrews 10 : 37-38.

37 FOR YET IN A VERY LITTLE WHILE,
HE WHO IS COMING WILL COME, AND WILL NOT DELAY.
38 BUT MY RIGHTEOUS ONE SHALL LIVE BY FAITH;
AND IF HE SHRINKS BACK, MY SOUL HAS NO PLEASURE IN HIM.

I could not explain it to you in less than 1000 words unless you are already familiar with this passage. Basically, most everyone I know has thought this refers to Jesus’ second coming. It is a passage from Isaiah used with a Messianic meaning in the New Testament, so it seemed. The preacher, who speaks very clearly despite the depth that he goes in our studies, crafted an argument through facts, mostly. In short, the book of Hebrews is dated just before 70 A.D., and given the context of judgment in Isaiah’s original meaning and that all early Christians were familiar with Jesus prophecy of the destruction of Jerusalem, the man argued that a view of judgment was a better interpretation. It made a lot of sense to me. It convinced me.

Religious conversion:

Supernatural means through experiences.

A testimonial argument

Diet:

Lack of energy, a heart attack, other experience

Seeing from other people what could happen if they continue

A person using a combination of facts and other’s experiences to use a pathetical and logical argument.

Racism:

Not being racist does not usually come from facts. I think it has do with someone showing how it feels when it happens to them. The hardest in this group to have a genuine debate with.

Obama: Hope and Change is all pathos and nothing else.
